BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION PHYSICAL THERAPY - PRINCETON SPINE & JOINT CENTER PODCAST

Welcome to episode #18 of the Princeton Spine and Joint Center Podcast. In this episode Dr. Scott Curtis, Sports Medicine Director at Princeton Spine and Joint Center, sat down with Nicole Cleffi, a blood flow restriction physical therapist from Robert Wood Johnson Physical Therapy and the topic of conversation was blood flow restriction physical therapy. They talked about this new form of technology being used in physical therapy, what it is, and certain patients who it's applicable for, and maybe some patients who its not so great for. They talked about some of the expected outcomes and how it could help patients both postoperatively and for nonoperative musculoskeletal issues. Enjoy! Full podcast episode here.

BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION TRAINING: THE NEXT BIG THING?

"Several weeks ago I read an awesome story from a previous podcast guest. You might know her if you watch a little tv station called ESPN. The guest, Stephania Bell, told us about her upcoming baseball spring training tour and then she mentioned blood flow restriction training (click here if you want need a refresher). I already had an idea about blood flow restriction training (BFR from now on because I don’t feel like typing it out every time!) from this article written by Stephania. Naturally, I had to ask her about BFR and the article. She summarized it well and mentioned “you need to talk to Johnny Owens.” So I reached out to Johnny and he agreed to be a guest on the Therapy Insiders podcast (which is below). Johnny is a smart guy that is excited about the potential of BFR and rightfully so based on the success he has had thus far with it. I don’t blame him. If you could improve the rehabilitation process for a lot of people while minimizing overall stress on their body, wouldn’t you? Yea, me too. Now a lot of you are probably asking right now how does blood flow occlusion training work? What is the science behind this? Who is this Johnny character? Can I try this out? Is he really going to keep asking questions for the rest of this blog? Well the answers to all those questions and more is in the podcast. So get your tourniquets ready (please don’t) and enjoy the podcast on blood occlusion training! JOHNNY OWENS ON HEADS N' TALES PODCAST

Johnny Owens speaks with Heads N' Tales Podcast about the ins-and-outs of BFR (blood flow restriction) therapy, how it got started, and who ought to be using it. Kevin Saum, the show's host, is so intrigued by the BFR research that he decides to try it out for himself. You can listen to the full podcast on blood flow restriction training here.

- The basics and science behind blood flow restriction

- How to use it clinically

- What patient populations can benefit from BFR training

- Risks and contraindications

- Future applications and research

- And more!

BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION TRAINING AND PHYSICAL THERAPY

January 21, 2015: Improving strength is a typical component of physical rehabilitation after injury. But often standing in the way of all the muscle building necessary to recover from an injury is the injury itself. While working at Brooke Army Medical Center, physical therapist Johnny Owens, PT, MPT, saw wounded warriors who needed to improve strength in injured limbs without further compromising vulnerable joints or soft tissue. So he and his colleagues began experimenting with a relatively new treatment method that’s gaining in popularity: blood flow restriction training, or BFR. The technique, which involves applying a tourniquet to an injured limb to partially restrict blood flow, allows patients to make greater strength gains while lifting lighter loads, thereby reducing the overall stress placed on the limb. In this episode of Move Forward Radio, Johnny Owens, MPT, describes how blood flow restriction training works, shares his vision for the potential of the technique within health care, and discusses where research is ongoing.
